AUT Chancellor Rob Campbell in discussion with AUT VC Damon Salesa

    Provocation as a Governance tool?

A conversation with Rob Campbell, CNZM

    AUT Council elects new Chancellor

Rob Campbell has been a private and public sector leader and advisor for more than 40 years but has seldom done or said the expected.

His approach to speaking up and taking action on things he believes are important for New Zealand have characterised his career, and seldom made for a quiet life.

From work promoting diversity; commercialising energy emissions innovation; appointing New Zealand’s first Pacific University Vice-Chancellor; to criticising government policy and being fired from Health New Zealand as a result, Rob has consistently lived by his values.

Described in a New Zealand Hearld article as ‘the anarchist who conquered the corporate world’, Rob has served as a union leader, chaired various corporate boards and received the Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit award in 2020 for his services to business.

Join us for a frank conversation between Rob and AUT’s Vice-Chancellor, Damon Salesa.

Rob is one of New Zealand’s leading professional directors, with more than 40 years’ experience in capital markets and as director and advisor to local and international businesses and organisations.

He is committed to seeing Aotearoa take a leadership role in the field of emissions lowering energy innovation and commercialisation, and is passionate about improving diversity and inclusion, promoting sustainability as a core value, and creating equality in the organisations he is involved with.

Rob trained as an economist and holding degrees of BA (Hons)(1st) and M.Phil. (Economics) Rob joined the union movement in the 1970s and became a member of the Federation of Labour and Labour Party executives. He was previously a Director of numerous private and public sector companies and is currently chair of SkyCity Entertainment Group Ltd, Summerset Group Ltd, Tourism Holdings Ltd, WEL Networks Ltd, Ara Ake Ltd, NZ Rural Land Co Ltd and was Chair of HealthNZ.

In 2019, Rob was awarded the Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) and is a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Directors (CFinstD). He was recognised as a Distinguished Alumni of Victoria University (Te Herenga Waka) in 2019.

The 2024 United States Business Summit

    A new era

Now in its third year, this one-day Summit takes place just weeks after the highly anticipated US Presidential election, a decisive moment in history that will see either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump headed to the White House.

This timing offers an unparalleled opportunity to analyse and comprehend the immediate implications of the election results on New Zealand-United States relations.

The Summit is a great opportunity for delegates to engage in debate and discussion that will inform the direction for New Zealand’s future with the United States, and network with senior business and political leaders.

    A CRITICAL PARTNER

The United States Business Summit is a premier event focused on strengthening the critical relationship between New Zealand and the United States. Over the past year, bilateral trade between our two countries has continued to thrive, with the United States surpassing Australia to become New Zealand’s second-largest export market as of March 2024. This underscores the deepening economic ties.

    INSIGHTS FROM THE ELECTION

Regardless of the outcome, the election result will bring significant shifts in US domestic and international policies, impacting areas such as trade, security, civil rights, climate change, and immigration. The Summit will provide valuable insights into how these changes might affect trade, investment and cooperation between our two nations.

In his opening address to the Summit, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon will outline how the New Zealand government views its evolving relationship with the United States and lay out strategic plans for the future.

    AN EVOLVING PARTNERSHIP

The 2024 summit will build on the momentum of previous years, focusing on the vast potential to expand the economic partnership between the United States and New Zealand. As a key source of foreign direct investment, innovation, research, and tourism for New Zealand, the United States is a vital partner for growth. The Summit will offer businesses a platform to explore new avenues for collaboration, including in emerging sectors such as green technologies, high-value sustainable agriculture, space exploration and deep tech partnerships.

As geopolitical shifts and evolving consumer expectations continue to reshape the global landscape, the Summit will dive deep into the impact of these changes on the United States-New Zealand relationship. It will allow business leaders and policymakers to consider how to recalibrate our approach to align with the new realities.

This one-day Summit will provide a dynamic forum for debate and discussion, helping to shape the future direction of New Zealand’s relationship with the United States. It is a must-attend event for those looking to stay ahead in a rapidly changing world, offering unmatched opportunities to deepen connections, drive meaningful progress in the relationship, and network with senior business and political leaders.
