I used to be the General Counsel for McDonald's NZ and Compliance Director for McDonald's internationally. McDonald’s NZ is a wholly owned subsidiary of McDonald’s Corp which is listed on the US Stock Exchange and because of that I have a wealth of experience in anti-corruption, FCPA, the US Patriot Act and OFAC. I’ve recently left McDonald’s and am looking at offering similar type legal services to US owned businesses. I’ve just launched my new business and website www.freelancelaw.co.nz I'm not just another law firm pitching for business though. I saw 2 opportunities in the legal market:
(1) that there are growing and mature businesses who don’t have an in-house lawyer and are reliant on law firms. These businesses either don’t have quite enough legal work, or they can’t afford to employ an in-house lawyer on a full time basis; or
(2) there are businesses who do have an in-house lawyer or legal team but they were overburdened and need a senior resource.
The opportunity as I saw it was to bridge this gap, resulting in the setup of my company, Freelance Law, to help businesses manage their in-house legal requirements in a cost effective and manageable way. I can be engaged 1-2 days a week or on an as required basis to help existing in-house legal teams with their overflow or to help with a project.
